about the book

Preaching Under the Influence

We start defining our identity during childhood, surrounding ourselves with those who are like us, with those to whom we can relate. But what happens when you can’t seem to fit in, when you struggle with finding those people with whom to assimilate? From there, the drive to find your belonging, your calling, and yourself can take you to places you didn’t anticipate on going.

Brandon Holt takes us on his very own journey of finding his identity, from facing difficulty with his mixed race to navigating his relationship with church, prescription pills, and God. In Preaching Under the Influence: A Minister’s Struggle, Holt shares his journey with addiction and how it affected his family, his church, and his value in himself—and how he had to hit rock bottom in order to find peace within his soul and redefine his relationship with God.
